As I was saying in my last post, the global allure of Bollywood funk continues. My friend K said he saw this commercial on TV the other day: Heineken's "The Date"



That's Rafi's Jaan Pechan Ho from the film Gumnaam composed by Shankar - Jaikishan, also seen in the movie Ghost World.  Reminds me of the finale of The Simpsons episode Kiss Kiss, Bang Bangalore  - a rousing Bollywood group dance to Kishore Kumar's Pal Bhar Ke Liye from the film Johny Mera Naam composed by Kalyanji - Anandji. There's a bad quality clip on youtube of that one, I have a good quality one somewhere on my HD I recorded once upon a time, I would put it up but Fox will only take it down, lol.

Disco Playlist

Today I'm sharing a playlist, this one is of disco favorites from bollywood films. A guilty pleasure to be sure, I started this playlist in the late 80s as a 90 minute mixtape. I often played it in my car on a long snowy drive home back then.  Ever since I started using iTunes and the iPod, my playlists have all grown without regard to time limits. This also happens to be my play order. 

I remember the mixtape remix era of the early 90s in cities such as New York, Toronto, Chicago. Local DJs putting out bootleg cassettes and CDs that rapidly grew in popularity and spread to the west coast of the US, the UK, India and the rest of the globe. Some of those artists made it to legit labels and some continue to produce even today.  I remember being surprised even at that time that the DJs sometimes chose some vintage bollywood disco numbers to remix as well as the contemporary numbers of the 90s. 

The current global popularity of bolly disco and funk still surprises me. Popular compilations include Bombay the Hard Way, Sitar Beat, Bombay Connection vol 1 & 2, Bollywood Funk Experience, Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga! among others.
