Ya Kurban

I absolutely love the way the great and versatile Mohammed Rafi has rendered this song to fit the heritage of the film's character. Are they singing about their women or their beloved Afghanistan? That's the beauty of filmi qawwali.  I did not translate this one because the video has subtitles and although they have taken liberties and have made a few mistakes, for the most part it's accurate and conveys the sentiment.

Recently Madan Mohan's official site posted an article about the composition of one of my all time favorite sad songs. Surprisingly, the song was composed some 20 years before it's debut in Heer Ranjha's soundtrack. A few years back I had read Gregory David Robert's Shantaram and was quite surprised to see this song mentioned in the book. There is an excellent live version on the Mohammed Rafi  Live Round The World  album.

As I was saying in my last post, the global allure of Bollywood funk continues. My friend K said he saw this commercial on TV the other day: Heineken's "The Date"



That's Rafi's Jaan Pechan Ho from the film Gumnaam composed by Shankar - Jaikishan, also seen in the movie Ghost World.  Reminds me of the finale of The Simpsons episode Kiss Kiss, Bang Bangalore  - a rousing Bollywood group dance to Kishore Kumar's Pal Bhar Ke Liye from the film Johny Mera Naam composed by Kalyanji - Anandji. There's a bad quality clip on youtube of that one, I have a good quality one somewhere on my HD I recorded once upon a time, I would put it up but Fox will only take it down, lol.

Gulaabi Aankhein

A classic Rafi tune: short, sweet, leaving you wanting more. The rhythm: reminiscent of a moving train - an inspiration RD Burman used in many of his compositions. *Imagines a young Shammi Kapoor on an actual train, leaning far out of a compartment, crooning this number after spotting a beauty out the window... sigh (if you are like me, the actual video that's floating around on youtube will disappoint, skip that and watch the full version of Main Jatt Yamla from Pratiggya instead for a Rafi fix, lol). If you love this original, and your mind is open to new interpretation, try Sonu Nigam's cover performed with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on the album Rafi Resurrected. The orchestra has done a phenomenal job on that album. Curiously he changes some of the lyrics: "kya karun main dilruba" and "bura hai jaadu" instead of the original below.
