Another favorite from my teen years. I know this one by heart. After I lost my music collection, it was impossible for me to replace this cassette. For years I searched in the stores. Then, one day, I stumbled upon Sa Re Ga Ma's Hamara CD website, I almost payed $30 USD for a CD of this soundtrack to be custom made in India and mailed to the US. A few years later, with the legal digital download and mp3 revolution, it was being sold in iTunes and I quickly bought it and a few other OSTs I had been dying to listen to. To me it's still a miracle that I can legally buy more and more soundtracks from Indian labels from the convenience of my desk. I mean who would have ever thought I could go to Walmart's website and buy desi music? mp3s are still a miracle to me, the fact that I have 19,000 songs in my pocket on the iPod instead of 10 or so on the old Sony Walkman is still a modern miracle for me.

This one is mostly in Punjabi, turning into Hindi near the very end of the song. I bought this cassette because I was intrigued by the title of this song, sadly the cassette was defective so I never got to listen to the song until a few months back. Luckily a friend gave me a vinyl recording. :D And as expected, it turned out to be a "new" old favorite. This song is about the story of Sohni Mahiwal (a portrait of them is at the top of this blog). According to the story of Sohni Mahiwal, Sohni often crossed the river to meet Mahiwal using an urn (ghada) as a float. Sohni drowned doing this one day because her urn was under-baked (kachcha) and therefore broke apart easily.

Anyone who has searched for lyrics for a song before knows that there's only a few people out there who actually transcribe the lyrics, and then a multitude of sites, blogs, etc copy and paste. Listening to this song the last few days I was inspired to do the lyrics, but I kept thinking, well it's pretty new, lots of people put up lyrics for "new" stuff, a search revealed that every one I came across had the wrong lyrics. :(
