This one is mostly in Punjabi, turning into Hindi near the very end of the song. I bought this cassette because I was intrigued by the title of this song, sadly the cassette was defective so I never got to listen to the song until a few months back. Luckily a friend gave me a vinyl recording. :D And as expected, it turned out to be a "new" old favorite. This song is about the story of Sohni Mahiwal (a portrait of them is at the top of this blog). According to the story of Sohni Mahiwal, Sohni often crossed the river to meet Mahiwal using an urn (ghada) as a float. Sohni drowned doing this one day because her urn was under-baked (kachcha) and therefore broke apart easily.

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar
Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Kachcha Ghada, Ho, Mitti Da, Jinnu Pyar Zamaana Kehnda Ae
the under-baked urn made of clay, that which the world calls love
Pyar De Dariya Da Naiy Khanda, Eis Vich Doobna Painda Ae
the river of love does not have a river bank, one has to drown in it
Kachcha Ghada, Ho Mitti Da, Jinnu Pyar Zamaana Kehnda Ae
Pyar De Dariya Da Naiy Khanda, Eis Vich Doobna Painda Ae
Ae Gal Vakhri Doob Ke, Man De, Meet Amar Ho Jande Ney
never mind that it is known that lovers become immortal after drowning
Aaj Vi Saalan Pichon Lokon Yaad Saanu Aaunde Ney
even today, after many years, we remember such people
Unna Da Naa Lai Ke Lok Mohabbatan Karde Ney
people utter their names and fall in love
Jinna Da Rab Rakha O Beriya Waale Par Uttarde Ney
those who have God's protection, those people with vessels are able to cross over
(beri can mean earthen vessel or boat)
Aaj Vi Channa De Khande Ucche, Geet Hawayein Gaandi Ae
'even today the banks of the river are too high', sing the winds
Aadhi Raati, Chupke Sohni, Mahiwal Nu Milne Aaundi Ae
(even today) in the middle of the night, Sohni steals away to come meet Mahiwal
Phullan Di Thay Badlan Di, Har Gal Navein, Puraani Lokan Ne Bhul Jaani
every new and old story of flowers and clouds will be forgotten by people
Rehangiyan, Rehndi Duniya Tak, Do Gallan, Dil Jaani
only two things will remain until the end of the world, my love
Ek Wagda Channa Da Paani
Ek Wagda Channa Da Paani, Dujje Sohni Mahiwal Di Kahani
one, the water that runs in the river; two, the story of Sohni Mahiwal
Ek Wagda Channa Da Paani, Dujje Sohni Mahiwal Di Kahani
Ek Wagda Channa Da Paani
Sukh De Ne Thay Sukh Jaavan, Dariya Thay Samundar Saare
if they are going to dry up, let all the rivers and oceans dry up
Toot De Ne Thay Toot Jaavan, Aasmaana De Chan Taare
if they are going to implode, let the moon and the stars in the sky implode
(tootna - to break)
Dharkhangiyan Dillan De Vich Suchiyan Thay Sachian Preetan
pure and true love will (always) beat inside (people's) hearts
Naal Jeen De Thay Naal Marran De Mukh Naiyon Sagdi Reetan
living together and dying together, these traditions will not disappear
Yaad Karangay Thay Rovangay Ek Dujje De Haani
their peers will remember them and cry
Ek Behta Channa Ka Paani, Dujje Tere Mere Pyar Ki Kahani
one, the water that runs in the river; two, our love story
Ek Behta Channa Ka Paani, Dujje Tere Mere Pyar Ki Kahani
Ek Aaj Ki Raat Suhani, Dujje Tere Mere Pyar Ki Kahani
one, this beautiful night ; two, our love story
